South Dakota

Fold a 12x18 blue piece of construction paper in eighths.  Color or draw pictures of state symbols.  Roll to make a cylinder.  Add a yarn hanger and colorful streamers.

On a 9x12 piece of cardboard, draw a SD state outline.  Mix 6 cups flour, 6 cups salt, 1/2 cup glue and enough water to make a goop.  Add green food coloring.  Students spread goop onto outline.  Students then draw the Missouri river and mound the goop to represent the Black Hills.  Let dry.  When dry, trace the river in blue, draw trees for the Black Hills with brown marker, put a black dot for Milbank, and a star for Pierre.  Add a key at the bottom of the map, if you wish.
