Spiders

• Read "The Spider in the Web" poem

• Read Miss Spider's Tea Party  and Spiders by Carolyn B. Otto and Spiders by Seymour Simon.  Discuss fiction/non fiction.

• Refer to the spider on page 9 in the book by Otto and tell children they will go on a scavenger hunt on the computer to see what kind of spider that is.  Bring up this website on the projector and walk through the scavenger hunt as a class.

• Make edible spiders with Oreos, pull-apart red licorice, frosting gel and mini chocolate chips

• OR  Boil for 1 minute - 2 cups sugar, 4 T. unsweetened cocoa, 1/2 cup milk, and 2 T. butter.  Stir in 1/2 cup peanut butter and 3 cups quick oatmeal.  Roll into balls and flatten on waxed paper.  Add Chinese noodles for legs and mini M&Ms for eyes.

• Complete experiment to explain why spiders don't get caught in their own webs.  Put a piece of scotch tape sticky side up on each desk.  Pretend you are a bug.  Walk your finger across and stick to the tape.    Dip your finger in oil and walk across the tape.   What happens?    Explain that spiders have a special secretion on the tips of their legs that keeps them from getting caught in the web.
